Futuristic Cabins Rooted in Tradition
The centerpiece of Lavandeira Douro is a collection of cabins designed by FCC Architectura. These futuristic-looking structures cleverly integrate with their rural surroundings. The secret lies in the thermally modified ash cladding, which creates a minimalist interior bathed in natural light thanks to expansive glass facades.
Inspired by Nature, Designed for Comfort
Nestled near the banks of the Douro River in the famed Ancede region, the cabins echo the traditional Portuguese settlements known as brandas, where shepherds would seasonally move their livestock. Following strict building limitations, architect Fernando Coelho opted for single-story, open-plan layouts. Pine-clad living areas flow seamlessly into two bedrooms and a sleek bathroom featuring natural black slate.
"Our aim," explains Coelho, who collaborated with interior designer Paulo Lobo, "was to craft a unique space that celebrates the essence of the brandas while offering a luxurious escape."
From Humble Beginnings to Grand Resort
Lavandeira Douro's story began over a decade ago with the vision of a public relations executive and her financier husband. Their dream was to transform a historic 18th-century manor into a charming guest house complete with a classic car museum, perfect for hosting wine tastings and weddings. Over time, the project blossomed into a full-fledged 46-room resort.
A Luxurious Escape Awaits
Upon arrival, guests are whisked away in electric buggies to their private havens nestled amidst the vineyards. The meticulously placed villas overlook a lagoon-shaped pool and a sprawling limestone spa complex cleverly camouflaged into the hillside by a rooftop herb garden. The spa boasts all the indulgence expected of a five-star establishment, featuring a heated pool, hydromassage treatments, a sauna, a Turkish bath, and a fully equipped gym.
A Culinary Journey Awaits
Named after a beloved farm horse, Elmo Restaurant resides within the converted stables. Architect Coelho meticulously preserved the structure's agricultural heritage, while interior designer Lobo revamped the interiors. The restaurant extends onto a spacious terrace boasting panoramic vineyard views. Led by talented regional chef Paulo Magalhães, Elmo's menu transcends the typical salad bar fare. Expect traditional Portuguese fare like feijoada bean stew, cured sausages, hearty broths, succulent roast lamb, and grilled meats – all perfectly complemented by Lavandeira Douro's very own wines and olive oil.
Lavandeira Douro Nature & Wellness offers a unique opportunity to reconnect with nature, indulge in luxurious comfort, and savor the rich flavors of Portugal's Douro Valley.
